How to get a UK EV grant: everything you need to know about EV grants

Are you looking to purchase an electric vehicle (EV), or maybe you want an EV charger installed in your home? If so, it’s worth learning about UK EV grants available, which can help cover some of the cost of going electric.

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) is offering a range of grants to those looking to make the switch to an electric vehicle. Read on to find out all about UK EV grants available and how you can access one.

What is the Electric Car grant?

UK EV grants have been introduced to encourage people to purchase electric vehicles to help accelerate their adoption.

On 15th July 2025, the UK government announced a new Electric Vehicle Plug-in Grant focused on reducing the cost of electric vehicles. Drivers can get a discount of between £1500 and £3750 on cars priced £37,000 or below. The level of discount you receive depends on the sustainability of the car's production. The takes into account the energy used to assemble the car and manufacture the battery.

There are two levels to this grant. Level 1 cars are scored more favourably against the government’s sustainability criteria and are therefore eligible for the maximum £3750 grant. Level 2 cars are not as sustainable, and receive the £1500 grant.

Level 1 cars include:

  • Ford E-Tourneo Courier
  • Ford Puma Gen-E

Level 2 cars include:

  • Citroën ë-C3 and Citroën ë-C3 Aircross
  • Citroën ë-C4 and Citroën ë-C4 X

OZEV EV chargepoint grants

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) has also introduced several grants to reduce the cost of installation of EV chargepoints. There are several different EV chargepoint grants available for home EV chargers, workplace EV chargers, EV chargers for landlords, and infrastructure grants, too. Below we have listed the different UK EV chargepoint grants, their eligibility, and what they can offer.

OZEV EV chargepoint grant for tenants and flat owners

The Electric Vehicle (EV) chargepoint grant allows people who rent or own a flat to reduce the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV charger. With the EV chargepoint grant, you can get up to £350 off the cost of home EV charger installation. To be eligible for the home EV chargepoint grant, you must:

  • Live in rental accommodation or own a flat.
  • Have dedicated off-street parking.
  • Own, lease, or have use of an eligible electric vehicle.
  • Have not previously claimed the grant.

For more detailed information about the OZEV EV chargepoint grant and eligibility criteria, read our OZEV grant eligibility guide.

OZEV EV chargepoint grant for landlords

This EV grant is available for anyone leasing, renting, or managing a commercial or residential property. This EV chargepoint grant for landlords could reduce the cost of an EV charger installation by 75% or up to £350 per charger. Only one application can be made per building, and the application cannot have a mix of residential and commercial properties. But you can apply for subsequent installations at the same property at a later date.

Up to 200 grants are allowed per financial year for residential properties and 100 grants per financial year for commercial properties. You must also have private parking for the cars and staff.

Infrastructure grant for residential car parks

An EV infrastructure grant gives you money off the cost of wider building and installation work that is needed to install multiple chargepoint sockets. This can be for sockets you want to install now and in the future. It can cover the cost of wiring and posts, for example. This EV grant applies to anyone who is renting, leasing, or managing a multi-tenancy residential property.

You can get up to £30,000 off the cost of works, but the amount depends on how many parking spaces the work covers. You could get:

  • Up to £350 per chargepoint socket installed
  • Up to £500 per parking space enabled with supporting infrastructure

You can apply for up to 30 grants per financial year, but each one must be for a different residential carpark.

Workplace EV grants

There are two EV grants available for workplaces. One for larger businesses, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), and one for smaller businesses, known as the infrastructure grant for staff and fleet.

Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based system. You can get up to £350 off per socket, up to a maximum of 40 sockets per applicant business. To be eligible, you must:

  • Have off-street parking and be able to outline a business need for electric vehicle chargepoints.
  • Get your chargepoints installed by an OZEV-approved installer, like Next Get Charge.
  • Apply for a digital voucher and present it to your chosen installer.

This scheme is available to the eligible:

  • Businesses
  • Charities
  • Public sector organisations
  • Small accommodation businesses

The Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education institutions

There is a separate grant available for state-funded schools and educational institutions to install electric vehicle chargepoints at their sites. This is available in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The grant covers up to 75% off the cost to buy and install EV chargepoints up to a maximum of:

  • £2500 per socket.
  • 40 sockets across all sites.

To be eligible for this grant, you must have:

  • An existing or future need for charging an electric vehicle
  • Designated off-street parking for the premises
  • Not have applied for the same chargepoint grant under the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets, or any other grant scheme.
  • The authority to apply for the scheme on behalf of your organisation

Once the grant is approved and your application is successful, you will receive a voucher, which is valid for 180 days, and the installation must be completed within this time.

The infrastructure grant for staff and fleet

This EV grant is available for smaller businesses with 249 employees or fewer. Your company must be either registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC. This gives you money off the cost of wider building and installation work needed to install multiple chargepoint sockets. The grant is capped at £15,000 per building and will provide up to £500 for passive and an additional £350 for active infrastructure per parking space. A business can get up to 5 grants per financial year, across 5 different sites.

You must install the infrastructure for at least 5 private off-street parking spaces, with at least one active chargepoint. These chargepoints must be for staff and fleet use only. You must also have this installed by an OZEV-approved installer, like Next Gen Charge.
